Let me start by saying that I LOVE lists! However, this is probably one of the more difficult Top 3’s I’ve ever considered. Three of the best classic rock albums of all time? Subjective and debatable for sure, but here are three that should be on any classic rock album list.

1. Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band by The Beatles

No ‘best of” list would be complete without a Beatles record.

For me, I have to put ‘Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band’ on this list. While I understand and accept a ‘White Album’ argument, I feel that Sgt. Peppers is a more fantastic “start to finish experience”.

In this case, less is more. In fact, if Strawberry Fields was to be on the album, I could envision it as possibly the greatest album of all time.

2. Led Zeppelin – IV.

Arguably the greatest pure rock and roll album that ever lived. This double diamond-certified album played as the soundtrack to millions of people in the 70’s. I have three words for you: Stairway to Heaven.

3. Back in Black by AC/DC

I changed my mind a dozen times for my third choice. I went in between ‘Rumours’, ‘Dark Side of the Moon and ‘Hotel California’. In the end, I decided on the AC/DC classic ‘Back in Black.

If you have any doubts, go immediately to your favorite streaming platform and queue up the title track. If that doesn’t get your blood flowing, nothing will.

The live music industry has been hit exceptionally hard by the COVID-19 pandemic, and Jeff Schroeder is the latest musician to help raise some much needed funds for crew workers who've been out of a job for nearly a year now. On Wednesday (February 10), the Smashing Pumpkins guitarist/keyboardist announced For The Crew — a virtual benefit concert with proceeds going to the Sweet Relief Musicians Fund.

“The whole of the music industry has been hit hard by Covid-19,” Schroeder said in a statement. “One particular segment of the industry that is often overlooked and/or forgotten is road crews. It’s quite simple: Without our crews, there would be no shows. These are the women and men behind the scenes who help bring our music to you. With this online benefit show, our hope is to raise both money and awareness for our crews.”

For The Crew is slated to take place March 6 at 7pm ET and will feature solo sets from Schroeder, Kevin Rudolf, and Tommy Marz.

“During this pandemic, there have been times where many people have felt helpless, myself included," Marz said. "As the opportunity arose to raise money for people whose incomes have been affected by Covid-19, the road crews became a focus of that opportunity. The road crew teams are an important part of the live show experience and have been affected greatly.”

“With so many people in our business out of work due to Covid, I’m happy there is a little something we can do to raise money and maybe bring a smile,” Rudolf added.

Smashing Pumpkins’ guitarist and keyboardist Jeff Schroeder will host a virtual concert to raise money for tour crew workers who are out of work because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The For the Crew show will take place March 6th at 7 p.m. ET, and feature solo sets from Schroeder, Kevin Rudolf, Tommy Marz and Katie Cole (who’s also in the Smashing Pumpkins live band). The show is being presented by NoCap with proceeds benefiting the Sweet Relief Musician’s Fund, which was set up to help those in the music industry impacted by the pandemic. Tickets for the concert are on sale now for $15.

“This pandemic has been challenging for many industries, but has been entirely devastating for those in the touring world,” Cole said. “While recording artists and musicians can adapt and pivot to an online format, those who work as production and road crew are completely without work now. Happy to shine a light on those behind the scenes people who make shows and touring possible.”
Tommy Marztag:www.tommymarzband.com,2005:Post/64403202020-09-22T14:05:42-04:002024-03-04T02:47:05-05:00CBS Sports Brian Campbell Interviews Tommy Marz
Brian Campbell interviews Tommy Marz about new album - Chasing Light

Marz recorded and filmed the song in quarantine after feeling a sense of shock watching what’s going on in the world, specifically with cyber-bullying. As he explains, “I recorded this song at a time when I was spending much more time on social media and I was disappointed, and in some cases appalled, at the way people were treating each other. Many people are passionate about the issues they believe in and they absolutely should be. But to wish death upon others or people’s loved ones crosses the line and at some point, checking our morality may need to become a priority before it’s too late to turn back. So, I observed from afar and truly felt stuck in the middle of what was occurring online, seeing both sides of the political spectrum attempt to destroy one another. I’ve always been a fan of the song, but it seemed to speak to me in a different way this time around and I decided to put my own passion into this wonderful song.”

Glide is thrilled to premiere Tommy Marz’ quarantine version of the Stealers Wheel classic “Stuck In The Middle With You.” Marz offers a gritty take where his howling vocals and creative instrumental ideas give this timeless nugget a 2020 shot in the arm.

Kramer filed a lawsuit against the group to regain his place with them at the ceremony, but it was denied.

In April 2019, Kramer suffered minor shoulder injuries that forced him to miss dates on the band’s “Deuces Are Wild” residency in Las Vegas. His drum tech John Douglas filled in, but when Kramer tried to return, they threw him a curveball – if he wanted to come back, he would have to re-audition, and the rest of the band would evaluate his performance to see if he could still play well enough to rejoin the band.

Aerosmith said they invited Kramer to rejoin the group, but he “has not been emotionally and physically able to perform with the band, by his own admission for the last 6 months.”

“Joey has now waited until the last moment to accept our invitation, when we unfortunately have no time for necessary rehearsals during Grammys week,” the band said.

Kramer, for his part, sued the six companies jointly owned by the five band members for breach of contract. However, Kramer said that the lawsuit was not about money.

“I am being deprived of the opportunity to be recognized along with my peers for our collective lifetime contributions to the music industry,” he said in a statement. “Neither the MusiCares’ Person of the Year Award nor the Grammys’ Lifetime Achievement honors can ever be repeated.”

Kramer’s lawsuit was denied by a Massachusetts court, which said he “has not shown a realistic alternative course of action sufficient to protect the band’s business interests.”

With the lawsuit out of the way, it would seem that’s the end of the story. However, CNBC spoke with attorneys and music industry professionals, some of whom said that this is not over.

“From a publicity angle, this is not the best look for the band,” said Tommy Marz, founder of the music site Sound Vapors. “You’re talking about an original member of the band that fans have come to love and expect to see on stage.”
Tommy Marztag:www.tommymarzband.com,2005:Post/64251272020-09-02T15:45:00-04:002022-04-12T10:42:07-04:00TWISTED SISTER’S DEE SNIDER REVEALS A LITTLE-KNOWN TRUTH ABOUT HIMSELF
The iconic fronting member of Twisted Sister, Dee Snider, has continued to contact with his followers on his official and verified Twitter account.

In anticipation for the album’s release, Tommy has dropped it’s first single, his collaboration with 90’s legends, P.M. Dawn. They’ve teamed up to cover the Puddle of Mudd classic, “Blurry.”

Explaining how the collaboration came about, Tommy says, “I was really missing Prince Be (lead vocalist for P.M. Dawn) and all of his genius (Prince Be passed away from a diabetes related complication back in 2016). I decided to cover a song that P.M. Dawn has played live so I reached out to Doc. G (who continues to perform and record music under the P.M. Dawn name) and asked if he’d be interested in being a part of the project. He liked the concept so we laid down our parts in the song. I just hope that we did it justice. Not only for Be, but for Wes (Scantlin) and the Puddle of Mudd guys as well. It’s such an emotional and special song.” The song is dedicated to the memory of Attrell Cordes (Prince Be).

EXCLUSIVE: Tommy Marz Band Shares New Anthem for Live Audiences, “Don’t Give A…”

Tommy Marz Band is getting fans ready for their debut, Bringing Alpha, available this spring on vinyl. Released digitally in December, this is a rock album from start to finish. Play. Listen. Rewind. Repeat may have been Tommy Marz’s solo debut, but Marz is returning to his rock roots with Bringing Alpha and calling it his most personal album to date.

“I tried not holding back when writing the lyrics,” Marz has said. He’s true to his words which are especially loud and clear in “Don’t Give A…”, a song that doesn’t take “no” for an answer. Just get up and get to the show. The song is great for throwing on in your car on your way to a concert, or at home beforehand while getting ready. Maybe the band even rocks out backstage as a warm up. Whatever the case, Tommy Marz explains it best:

“This song sums up what pretty every band wants to say about coming out to a show. There isn’t an excuse that any of us hasn’t heard. And if there are any new ones…I don’t give a sh*t. Come to the show.”

Listen below to “Don’t Give A…”. Bringing Alpha will be available on vinyl on May 27th with four tracks unavailable via the digital release.

http://www.elmoremagazine.com/2016/03/music-news/tommy-marz-band-shares-new-anthem-for-live-audiences-dont-give-a
Tommy Marztag:www.tommymarzband.com,2005:Post/40873522016-03-14T15:21:31-04:002016-03-14T15:24:33-04:00New review by ESPN's Brian Campbell
Tommy Marz Album Review Written by ESPN’s Brian Campbell

If you’re going to proudly wear your influences as a songwriter and musician, you might as well wear them well.

Detroit native Tommy Marz – songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and eponymous frontman for the Tommy Marz Band — does exactly that in the band’s latest album “Bringing Alpha.”

The melodic hooks of 90’s alternative rock are unmistakable, as are the edgy guitar riffs and vocal delivery. But the album is far from a retro tribute to the sonic heritage of bands like Stone Temple Pilots and Alice In Chains.

If anything, Marz’s influences merely invite the listener to explore the deeper meaning of his music because of how familiar the record feels at face value. Without question, there’s an instant level of accessibility, but it’s careful not to compromise the music’s integrity.
For a rock record, “Bringing Alpha” may tiptoe at times towards a mainstream feel, but the detours are short. This isn’t pop rock; instead a mature statement, built on the foundation of a dark backbone to each track which belies even the album’s brightest moments.

It doesn’t take long to realize there’s something deeper going on at the album’s core – an onion that has yet to be fully unpeeled by both artist and listener(though you begin to feel like you’re getting closer each time). There’s pain and regret for sure, but also the embodying spirit of a survivor who is ready to step into his second act.

If every album is a manifestation of a journey — whether recent or accumulated — the coming-of-age quality to Marz’s songwriting is refreshing.

Marz, who had previously fronted the rock band GoToZero for over a decade before going solo and spreading his wings into different genres, presents his most focused and complex work on “Bringing Alpha.” Make no mistake, this is his all-in moment and the result is a tightly produced collection of nine tracks that equally share the wisdom he has acquired.

No song is a better example than the album’s finale (and finest work) “Chasing The Tiger,” where Marz equates his journey of chasing his music dreams to “a drug that won’t stop calling you.” The track is a powerful medley of song fragments, featuring driving riffs and the exclamation point of Marz’s scream before the guitar solo.

It’s clear very early that Marz has a knack for song arrangement, with many tracks taking unpredictable turns that are purposely jarring, yet far from off-putting. The music is allowed to spread its wings and take chances without the train staying for too long off the tracks.

Case in point is the insanely catchy “Space In Time,” which alternates between foot-tapping verses soaked in the nostalgia of his Michigan upbringing and a much darker chorus, welcomed in by the lyric “Bye bye the innocence is gone, you didn’t need me, you’re never coming home.”

The band is at its tightest and most cohesive point on the very polished “Star,” which doubles as the album’s most radio friendly tune. Marz shines here vocally, just as well as he does during the melodic guitar solo.

Marz borrows heavily from his 90s influences in the sunny “Super Overload,” which fuses moments of friendly alt-rock choruses with dark and gritty guitar licks. The track does the same thing lyrically, celebrating his addiction to the song’s female antagonist in question in one verse only to curse it moments later in the bridge.

The album’s most underrated track just might be “Road To Nowhere,” where Marz bares his soul once again about the frustrations that come with navigating the music business. It’s unapologetic rock and roll at its finest, and is soaked in a vitriol of lament that provides the foundation for its grit. But it’s not just anger for the sake of it; Marz’s frustrations are underwritten by a lingering element of hope, executed perfectly by his exclaim of “You can’t stop me!” in the anthemic chorus.

Whether it’s the trademark scream he uncorks at the start of the album’s rocking kickstarter “Born To Follow” or the sinister tone he delivers in the mysterious and dark “Room With A View,” Marz does well to showcase his depth as a singer throughout. On “Common In Disguise,” for example, he uses a delivery that is indistinguishable to his voice on any other track.

While “Bringing The Alpha” is far from a concept album, there’s a context of unity to each track that binds the music together. With a total run time of just over 30 minutes, part of the album’s charm is that it doesn’t belabor or linger; instead it leaves you wanting more — not just from each one of the album’s standout tracks, but from the songwriter himself.

Tommy Marz is weathered, if not bruised by his journey to this point as a musician, as evidenced by both the intensity of the music and the honesty of his lyrics. But his scars tell an interesting story and tease to the potential of the artist he is on his way to becoming.

Tommy Marz Band had everyone dancing and singing to their eclectic mix of late 90s alt-rock covers, and some originals.

Tommy Marz has been hard at work recording new material. His plan is to release a double album, one disc of pop music and one disc of rock music. His band decided to take a break from the studio to open up for The Dan Band at the Royal Oak Music Theatre on January 23, 2015.

Tommy Marz and his band were an absolute nuclear bomb of energy erupting the moment they took the stage. Unusual since usually opening acts go through the motions while the majority of the audience socialize with each other, milling around waiting for the main act to go on stage, but Marz (guitars/vocals), Jason Tucker (drums) and Chris Alef (bass) were undeniably the center of attention from the moment they took the stage. It was a roller coaster of old-school alt-rock tunes from Marz’s previous band GoToZero, a litany of late-nineties and early aught hits, mixed with a few high-energy originals from start to finish.

They opened their set with a brief intro to Rage Against The Machine’s, “Bomb Track,” that segued flawlessly into Seven Mary Three’s, “Cumbersome,” stomping through it just as expected: loud, strong and tight. Tucker mentioned, after the set, that this has been a show staple for this band since their humble beginnings.

As soon as, “Cumbersome,” ended, and without so much as a single breath of delay, they launched into a cover of Pearl Jam’s, “Animal.” This was the track that really brought the house to the front of the stage. I started seeing hands in the air while the crowd bounced along. Marz’s Fender Strat soared through the solo and got the floor screaming. The surprise on the crowd’s faces was evident as soon as the song got going. And by the end of the song, everyone was swaying along to it.

The band then put the covers to rest for a bit, and played an original from GoToZero’s previous release ROBOTS called, “Beautiful World.” A fast-paced, pop-rock tune, it sought out those last few holdouts in the crowd and brought smiles to their faces. Tucker executed the locomotive drum patterns with robotic precision, shaking the floor in the process.

After this, the band teased the crowd with another brief song intro, Black Sabbath’s, “Sweet Leaf,” which segued right into Silverchair’s, “Tomorrow.” Alef’s bass carried the song through Marz’s shredding solo, and watching Tucker’s arms swing madly was a sight you will just have to behold for yourself.

Marz announced that the show would be coming to a close after the next few songs, and the crowd groaned with dismay. With a devilish grin, Marz told the crowd the next song was a brand new tune that he’d wrote that very day, and launched into a cover of Smashing Pumpkins’, “Cherub Rock.” Hands went into the air and bodies again began to move. They performed a spot-on tribute to one of the most iconic songs from the nineties.

“Cherub Rock,” came to a sudden and abrupt end, and Marz tickled the crowd yet again with a song intro, White Zombie’s, “Thunder Kiss ’65,” which segued perfectly into the show-closer, “Waste of My Time.” An original from the GoToZero days, this heavy-rock anthem is a barrage of anger and thick riffs over John Bonham style thunder that absolutely brought the roof down. Amazingly enough, though, the show didn’t end there.

After the outro to, “Waste of My Time,” Alef stepped to the front of the stage and began hammering out the bass riff to, “Sabotage,” by the Beastie Boys. With a crash from Tucker’s cymbal, Marz stepped one last time to the mic and screamed out the words with everything he had. It was this song that instantly turned The Dan Band’s fans into Tommy Marz Band’s fans. The final chorus had the entire house shrieking the words so loudly that Marz could no longer be heard.

Tommy Marz – Play. Listen. Rewind. Repeat (Stagefiend Records)
Tommy Marz earned his rock ‘n’ roll spurs fronting Detroit outfits Ease and Go To Zero. Both bands had a reputation for turning up their guitars and rocking hard, so when Marz released his debut solo album “Rival” in 2012, and it displayed his softer, more reflective side - including a cover of George Michael’s “Faith” (a YouTube smash) - it surprised many.

Now, just a year later, Marz has returned with a follow-up record, “Play. Listen. Rewind. Repeat”, a seven-track mini-album comprising of six original songs and concluding with a version of Prince’s “1999”; recorded live in the studio, quite simply with just an acoustic guitar and something jangly providing accompaniment. It’s a neat take on a song that we’re used to hearing with kitchen-sink production, and although it doesn’t hang around – it clocks in at a single second under two minutes – it would be easy to imagine it becoming as popular as the fore-mentioned “Faith”.

That’s all well and good, but it would be a shame if it deflected attention from Marz’s own songs, especially as he’s written some of the strongest material of his career. First track “Best of Me” is nigh on perfect. It reminds be a little of the classic pop tones of artists like Jason Faulkner and Matthew Sweet, who combine grown-up songwriting with infectious arrangements and hooks that can’t quite be dislodged. “Face to Face” is just as good and “A Kid In The 1980’s (White Adidas)” relives the decade in question with a litany of references, from Mr. T to “Hungry Like The Wolf” – and if it were released into a just and fair world, it’d likely be a massive summer hit.
Here I stand before you
I rack my brain for the right thing to say
I want to take a picture
So I remember the way you look today

The first time I saw you
You stood across the room
The moment our eyes met
I knew nothing would do
But to have you

Tomorrow I’m leaving on a journey
That will forever take me away from you

Tommy Marz’ lyrics, music and his voice in “No Regrets” sound beautiful together and mesh perfectly. Most of his songs are upbeat and poppy, but the music is more rock and his voice would remind the listener of Lifehouse’s Jason Wade. Marz’ voice is definitely unique, sometimes it’s high pitched and other times it’s deeper, depending on what message he wants to put across. He keeps the listener guessing throughout the album.

Marz is a singer songwriter with a sweet, pure voice who decided to record Rival, a softer solo album compared to the harder music played with his band Go to Zero. Marz is a one man show, because he layers his voice and his instruments together. His musical influences include Brendan Benson, Wilco, Duncan Sheik, Blind Melon, Jason Mraz, Brian Vander Ark, Cee Lo Green, John Mayer and The Beatles.

Woke up to another day
I wish this feeling would go away
Now it’s been so long
Since I’ve been outside without my shirt on
I wanted to feel the sunlight on my skin
Is it so wrong to wish that we all could start again?

I want to drive and go just to be alone
So no one will see me again
No eyes to see my lies
All the imperfection lines
My rival is just my friend
My eyes are clear again

Sometimes in life there are times when you just want to be alone. You don’t want anyone to see you or criticize you, so you take a drive, take a nap, or just sit in your room alone. This time alone can help you clear your head. This is what the listener could imagine when listening to the above lyrics from Marz’ song “Rival.” Marz jams on his electric guitar instead of his acoustic this time and might remind the listener of Duncan Sheik’s song “Barely Breathing.”

And to top it all off, Marz’ second song on the album is none other than a cover of George Michael’s “Faith.” Marz sings it similarly to Michael’s version, which is exactly what he was going for. He plays his acoustic guitar, stomps his feet, and sings it in a similar style. The listener will instantly love his version, if they are a fellow George Michael fan that is!

Here’s an exclusive interview with Tommy Marz.

ES: Tell me a little bit about your background and how you came up with your sound?

TM: In truth, I am a Grunge junkie. The majority of my songwriting years were spent writing and developing Grunge/Rock type songs. But the other type of music I am passionate about is 80′s music. Duran Duran is still among my very favorite groups. Then throw in a few contemporary artists like John Mayer and Sara Bareilles and the itch to record some Pop based songs came about. Then from there I wanted to incorporate other instruments that I haven’t used before into the mix.

ES: What made you decide to record a solo album?

TM: I recorded a song in my spare time called “About A Fool” and it had this Bluesy/Alt Rock/Pop feel to it. When playing and recording with my Rock band, Go To Zero, I’ve always written songs that didn’t really fit with the band’s sound. I always thought that one day this might lead to me recording a solo record. I had an idea of what I wanted it to sound like, and instead of wasting time showing someone what I was looking for, I just decided to play everything myself. The only time I didn’t was when I had a friend, Mike Elgert, come in and play guitar on the song “About A Fool”. Then I had Jason Tucker come in and produce it. The more we got into it, the more I thought I could actually finish the thing.

ES: I love George Michael’s Faith, and your version was awesome by the way!! Why did you decide to cover it?

TM: Thanks for that! I love his version too. That was one of the motivating reasons behind covering it. I wanted to sort of take it back from Limp Bizkit’s version and record a cover that was more like George’s. So I stay pretty close to the original but this was intentional. Here’s a funny thing… the stomps you hear at the beginning and throughout the song are a set of stairs mic’d up from underneath and above, while I am sitting on them just stomping away. But Jason had the idea and we tried it!

Review: Tommy Marz

Tommy Marz – Rival (Stagefiend Records)
For the last eight or nine years, Tommy Marz has fronted Go To Zero, a grungy guitar outfit that built up a considerable following around their home state of Michigan. Interestingly, though they were obviously in thrall to bands like Soundgarden and Stone Temple Pilots, they retained a distinct pop edge, so perhaps we shouldn’t be surprised that Marz’s debut solo album abandons the rock and instead settles on a contemporary pop sound. Whether it’s a calculated tilt at commercial success or a long-held desire to break free from the trappings of a rock band, and to release his inner John Mayer, I’ve no idea, but I can confirm he sounds like a natural. It’s also worth noting that there hasn’t been a complete break from his Go To Zero bandmates, most of whom turn up on “Rival”, co-producing, playing and even designing the artwork.

From the opening “Love (Around You)” we’re in pop-singer-songwriter territory. The production is crisp and the hooks pronounced. It’s followed by a cover of George Michael’s “Faith” (Michael is perhaps the ultimate pop-singer-songwriter) and surely its inclusion here is nothing short of a statement of intent, or even a declaration of independence. It’s a fairly straight cover, but no less enjoyable for that. “All My Energy” has a great ‘80s feel to it, without the restrictive production which has blighted most of that decade’s pop output, and “Polly Anna” might once have been the obvious single, a perfect calling card to radio and press. All in all, “Rival” is a thoroughly agreeable pop record, with plenty of fine songs and radio-friendly hooks, and Marz definitely has the talent and experience to see it through. All that’s lacking is a huge audience, and unfortunately, that’s the most difficult bit.
